how to get refund of airfare?

We have 4 tickets booked to phoenix from aug.18 to aug.27. with an insurance policy.but we had to cancel it as my in-laws were not able to fly from india due to health rasons. But policy says since my in-laws are not in USA, you can’t get money back. but there is a valid reason behind it. for me and my husband also to get money back we have to show some documents. Can anybody help me on this?Thanks in advance

you can’t get a full refund…Most, if not all, airlines do not refund your money…however, they will allow you usually up to a year or two to make good on your tickets and you can change the dates…good luck

Do you have a copy of the insurance policy? If you do, please check it. You’ll probably find that it does, in fact, exclude conditions outside the USA. If that’s the case, the insurance is probably without value, and useless.
Call the airline’s customer service department. Explain the situation. Often, they’ll let you apply the cost of the ticket to another ticket within a year of the original ticketing date and charge an administrative fee to do that.

Most airline companies say in their Terms/Policy that on some unexpected event/s, they will not refund an air fare/ticket. It would be better if you knew that before you bought the tickets. But then we ALL know unexpected events are, well, unexpected. Just follow their instructions so you can have the refund on your side. It happened to me and if your impatient because you have to follow their rules, then don’t do it. You can’t do anything about it. It’s their policy. It’s business.

You have to read all documents carefully before you purchase travel insurance — they normally cover people who live in the USA only — not foreign . Your relatives should of purchased their own travel insurance in their home country (since they are older). If your policy states foreigners are covered then you have to call the insurance company and debate the issue of refunds — why not use the portion of the tickets that belong to you and your spouse….travel tickets are valid for one year from date of purchase - reschedule and fly at a later date— don’t let the tickets go to waste if you can help it. Consult with a lawyer to make sure the insurance company is being honest with you—

No matter where your parents live, the airline would have to have documentation from a medical doctor stating that they are unfit for travel. Once the airline receives that certified letter, they would be inclined to refund the money. If you booked through a travel website, you may have to appeal to them rather than the airline, it depends on the website.
Get the letter and take it to the local airport if the airline you are flying is one based there. Ask to speak to a supervisor and they can handle it from there. You may have better luck at the ticket counter rather than calling the customer service line.
