I am planning a trip to the UK at the end of summer and I’m having trouble finding a good deal on airfare. I’ve been looking directly at airline sites (aa.com , united.com, etc.) instead of going to Priceline and Travelocity. I’ve noticed they’re a few hundred less if I buy them direct from the airline.

HOWEVER I was cruising through aa.com about a week ago and the lowest ticket I found was about $760. I checked again just now and it jumped to about $1050. I was told it is usually a good idea to buy tickets as early as possible, but after a week they’re already $300 more! Is there some sort of pattern to this? Or is this mostly due to a sudden surge in people buying tickets?

I’m pretty flexible with my dates but I wanted to depart in early-mid August and fly back in early September. I can afford a $1000 ticket (gulp!) but of course I’d rather be in that $760 price range! Any tips or ideas? Which airlines are generally cheaper? And is there any chance prices will drop soon?
